These congenital deformities occur in approximately 1 in 700 children. Left unrepaired, cleft lips and palates pose numerous medical issues with feeding, language acquisition, dental abnormalities, and ear infections.

Operation Smile is a non-profit international children’s medical charity that performs cleft lip and cleft palate surgery, and delivers postoperative and ongoing medical therapies to children in low and middle income countries. Clefts are frequently left untreated in regions of the world which lack sufficient medical care and financial resources. Operation Smile — through the help of dedicated medical volunteers —provides free surgical procedures for children and young adults and trains local medical professionals in developing countries so that more children in some of the poorest areas in the world can be treated.

On Sunday March 22th 2015, Brynn Blackwood, with the guidance of certified personal trainer and Zumba instructor Rhonda Cook, will be hosting a Zumba-thon fundraiser for Operation Smile. This fundraiser will take place at the Clarkson Community Centre in Mississauga between 1-3pm. All proceeds raised by personal donations and pledges generated through participants will go directly to Operation Smile. Tax receipts will be provided by Operation Smile for any monetary donations, however, we are also actively seeking any non-monetary donations small or large for prize draws and give-aways such as gift baskets, gift certificates and food donations.
